Jude Law - A british gentleman
In the American entertainment magazine Vulture, he is described as something of a 'genius misunderstanding': "Jude Law's presence and exceptionally good looks do not enchant; they capture you instead."
This characterization may also say something about the 50-year-old British actor's struggle to find the right niche. Since his breakthrough role as Dickie Greenleaf in "The Talented Mr. Ripley" (1999), he has ventured into almost every genre. As the newspaper Politiken wrote on the occasion of his 50th birthday, Jude Law's film career has been "a delightful blend of forgettable roles in forgettable films and surprising choices with often surprisingly good results."
He was born in Lewisham in southeast London in 1972. His full name is David Jude Heyworth Law. However, it was the name Jude that stuck. There were two good reasons for this: his parents were both schoolteachers, primarily inspired by the British poet Thomas Hardy's book, "Jude the Obscure." But they were also avid Beatles fans, so the 1968 hit "Hey Jude" likely played a role as well.
However, it was not a teaching career that would become his livelihood. It became clear early on that he had a talent for acting. At the age of 22, he gained attention in the play "Les Parents Terribles." Although the stage played a significant part in his career, it was the film industry that paid the bills.
Throughout the 1990s, his name appeared in a series of more or less forgotten films. Until he landed the role that opened the doors of Hollywood for the young Jude Law. It was in the film "The Talented Mr. Ripley," where he acted alongside Matt Damon and prominent actresses like Gwyneth Paltrow and Cate Blanchett.
In the years that followed, the path was open to significant roles. He is perhaps best remembered for his role as the sniper Vasily Zaytsev in the epic war film "Enemy at the Gates" (2001), the romantic comedy "Alfie" (2004), and the film "The Aviator" (2004) about the eccentric Howard Hughes portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio.
In light of his image as the 'class heartthrob,' it is perhaps more remarkable that some of his most significant successes have been more unorthodox and colorful performances. Like his portrayal of Dr. Watson in Guy Ritchie's modernization of Sherlock Holmes and his role as the young American pope in Paolo Sorrentino's TV series "The New Pope" (2020).
Younger moviegoers will undoubtedly also remember Jude Law for his role as the young Albus Dumbledore in the sequels to the Harry Potter films: "Fantastic Beasts."
Both youthful and more mature audiences have been able to see Jude Law this year as Captain Hook in "Peter Pan and Wendy" and in the role of the mad King Henry VIII in the film "Firebrand."
The genre choices have been many - and very diverse. From children's and youth films to hardcore war films and romantic comedies. At the age of 50, it will be exciting to see which genre the now slightly older quintessential English actor will venture into.
On the personal front, his life can almost be painted with the same brush as the womanizing Henry VIII and his many marriages. Over the years, Jude Law has managed to father no less than seven children. The most recent was born as recently as February of this year with his current wife, Phillipa Coan. Moreover, he has also found the time to engage in a range of philanthropic endeavors.
